Step 1 Revision

1 Give the Ss a short test on the verbs that they revised for homework.

2 Revise the picture on SB page 54: What can you see? Talk about Christmas Eve: What happens? What do Jim and Kate put at the end of their bed? What does Father Christmas do?

Who is Father Christmas? etc.

Step 2 Presentation

SB page 55, Part 1. Get the Ss to read the passage quickly to find the answer to the question at the top of the page. (The answer is the birthday of Jesus Christ.)

Step 3 Reading

Let the Ss read the passage more carefully. Discuss its meaning by asking questions, such as Do Mr and MrsGreen have stockings? What do they give to each other? What happens on Christmas Day? etc.

SB page 55, Part 1. Speech Cassette Lesson 55. Play the tape twice. The first time, the Ss just listen and follow the story. The second time, they listen and repeat.

Step 4 Practice

SB page 55, Part 2. Go through the boxes with the Ss and make sure they understand what the phrases

mean. Then get the Ss to write down six sentences,using two phrases from each box.

Ask some Ss to read out their sentences.

Step 5 Workbook

Wb Lesson 55, Exx. 1 and 2.

Let the Ss work alone quietly on these exercises. Thenthey can check their answers in pairs. Finally, gothrough the answers with the whole class. The answers to Ex. 1 are: 1 D, 2 B, 3 C, 4 D, 5 D.

The answers to Ex. 2 are: at the end, go, bed, give; kind / kind-hearted, on, top, down, presents; before, breakfast, wake, up, wait, open, wake; up, Merry, Christmas; birthday, of, was, born, gave, presents, each, other.

If time allows, look at the Christmas cards and NewYear cards on page ii of the Students' Book. Tell theSs to make one for their parents. Try to make it looklike a real one.
